Adverbial Phrase 

An adverbialphrase is simply a group of two or more words that function as an adverb in a sentence

Adjective Phrase

An adjective phrase is a group of words that describe a noun or pronoun in a sentence.

Prepositional Phrase

A prepositional phrase is a group of words that describe a preposition in a sentence. 

To analyze these phrases,  we can make a tree diagram.  The tree diagram is easier to understand when we are finding phrases above. 

She wrote a message on the wall. 

The baby slept soundly. 

The children scream histerically. 

Ken made a cake for the party. 

Suzanna is extremely scary move. 

The way to make the tree diagram:

- Make the acronym of sentence become 'S' 

- divide the 'S' into two parts: NP and VP

- identify the word depend on its part of speech

The acronyms:

1. S: Sentence 

2. NP: Noun Phrase

3. VP: Verb Phrase 

4. V: Verb

5. N: Noun

6. Det: Determiner

7. Adv.P: Adverbial Phrase 

8. Deg: Degree (kind of adverb) 

9. Adj: Adjective 

10. Pro: Pronoun 

11. Pre: Preposition

12. PP: Prepositional Phrase

 NOUN PHRASE AND VERB PHRASE

PHRASE

Ø  is a group of words that have a function in a sentence

Ø  Is compound word that doesn’t consist of subject and verb

NOUN PHRASE/NP

A group of related words that can act as a single noun-like within unity in a sentence.

Noun phrases start with determiners which are placed at the beginning of noun phrase. It is divided into 2 part::

1. Types of basic noun phrase

a. Noun                   : book, pencil

b. Det + N               : the city, that cat

c. Q + N                  : some people, a cup of coffee

d. Det + Adj + N      : my beautiful sister

e. Q + Det + N        : Most of the animals dance under the tree

f.  Q +Det +Adj + N : Some of my best friends are doctors.

g. Adj + N               

h. Det + Adv + Adj + N

2. Types of complex noun phrase

PRE-MODIFIER

Pre-modifier, including modifiers that stand alone before the head of complex NP.

•          Determiner

•          Adverb

•          Adjective phrase

•          Noun

POST-MODIFIER

Pre-modifier, including modifiers that stand alone after the head of complex NP.

•          Adjective

•          Prepositional phrase

•          Infinitive

•          Participle

•          Relative clause

VERB PHRASE/VP

Is consist of an auxilliary, or helping verb and a main verb.

1. Beginner

    a. Main verb

                - we are here    

                - i like it

                - she saws the accident

                - we laughed     

    b. The auxiliary verb be and a main verb in the –ing form

                - everybody is watching

                - we were laughing

                - mr.prank was singing

                - we are celebrating santri’s day

    c. The auxiliary verb have and a main verb in the past participle form

                - they have enjoyed themselves

                - i had finished my work

                - everybody has prepared well

                - Mrs D has taught us for a year

     d. A modal verb (can, could, may, should, will, shall, must) and a main verb

                - they will come

                - he might come

                - i can get it

                - you must attend my invitation 

2. Intermediate

    The auxiliary verbs have and been and a main verb in the –ing form:

    auxiliary have been -ing form

3. Advance

    We can use the auxiliaries  do  and  did  with the infinitive for:

    emphasis:

    It was a wonderful party. I did enjoy it.

    I do agree with you. I think you are absolutely right.

    polite invitations:

    Do come and see us some time.

    There will be lots of people there. Do bring your friends.
